Back in the 19th century, however, this county was at the center of an illegal trade in poitín – or Irish moonshine. Inishowen in particular was such a hive of illegal activity that the area was jokingly referred to as the Urris Poitín Republic. Fed up with the heavy fines, the people of Urris declared themselves the independent nation of the “Urris Republic of Poitín” and sealed themselves in by collapsing the pass in 1812, McLaughlin-Doherty explains. The townspeople were able to be self-sufficient because of their farmlands and fishing, thus allowing the Urris Republic of Poitín to last for three years before the coup was ended in 1815. The Catholic Church, a stronghold in Ireland, was instrumental in the eventual curbing of illegal poitín production.

On a summer lawn outside Ballybeg Hall, the O’Donnell siblings loll under lemony sunlight perfect for a family reunion. A wedding has lured back two of the émigrés among them, but Claire, the bride-to-be, has always lived at home. A widower with young children he wants her to raise, he has promised her a car for Christmas, and days full of nothing to do. None of which matches the dreams she once had of channeling her musical talent into a performing career. “He’s buying a piano so that I can teach the children to play,” Claire says, the flatness of her voice the barest camouflage for her anguish.

Ireland clinched their World Cup berth with a nerve-jangling victory over Scotland in a playoff at Hampden Park. People in Ireland often reference the men's World Cup debut in Italy in 1990, McCabe said. She hopes people back home will recall the women's debut in similar fashion, that it will be their "Italia '90." "It's the first time that we at this world stage which is massive, the way we've come here is something to be really, really proud of.

Ireland offers generous cash grants for those who want to live on remote islands off its western coast. To meet the funding criteria, people must buy property on one of the idyllic islands. The new initiative will come into effect on July 1. However, a person must own property on one of the islands built before 1993 that has been vacant for at least two years. Something else to consider is that while anyone can own property in Ireland, that doesn't necessarily guarantee the right to live in the country, according to CNN.
